It's what remains of the stuff when you kill its body - pure spirit. And yet, you wouldn't think that the soul of such a rugged distillation would turn out to be so...accommodating. Easy, if you prefer: Vodka is Whiskey with low self-esteem. It'll mix with anything.
The only difference between Whiskey and Vodka is that traditionally, the Russians -- and the Ukrainians, Poles, Letts, Kashubians, and other proud peoples of the north - have preferred to filter their grain alcohol through charcoal, while Celts and Anglo-Saxons like theirs aged in wood. Either way, pure firewater goes in the front end and something much more palatable comes out the back. It's just that filtering is, well, quicker. Easier. Cheaper. Which brings us to World War II.
Y'see, Americans didn't drink Vodka until after 1945. Sure, it turns up from time to time in the 1930s, but oh-so-sparingly. A novelty, as it were. But then there was all that unpleasantness with assorted Germans and Japanese and suchlike, and suddenly Uncle Sam found himself in need of truly gargantuan amounts of alcohol, and not because soldiers like a nip now and then: It seems you can use the stuff to make explosives. (Is there anything alcohol can't do?) So, most of the Whiskey that previously sat for a spell in new charred-oak barrels went instead into torpedoes and two-thousand-pound bombs. Fair enough.
When the bombs stopped going off and everybody left standing was back in civvies and harboring something of a thirst, a wee problem was discovered. The distilleries had lots of raw Whiskey on hand, but they didn't have a hell of a lot of the aged stuff. Solution: Mix 'em - Uncle Sam was born and became a conqueror of Cocktail lovers.
